On top of the presidential race and other key contests, the futures of state supreme courts around the country were also on the ballot.
That was especially so in Michigan and Ohio, where partisan control hung in the balance. Here’s what happened in those states and in other races:
- Michigan: Democrats expanded their 4-3 majority to 5-2, with Democrats winning both races.
- Ohio: Republicans expanded their 4-3 majority to 6-1, with Republicans winning all three races.
- Arizona: Voters declined to oust two justices who voted for the state’s abortion ban.
- Florida: Voters declined to oust two justices appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican.
- North Carolina: The right-wing court’s 5-2 majority would expand if Democratic Justice Allison Riggs is defeated. That close race has not been called by NBC News and could be headed for a recount.
- Alabama: In the chief justice contest, Republican nominee Sarah Stewart, who as an associate justice concurred with the Alabama Supreme Court’s controversial IVF ruling, defeated the Democratic challenger.
