Throughout history and across the world, women have held the highest seats of power, and the highest offices – from ancient civilizations to modernity. The vast majority of them have come to power through lines of succession, not democratic election. Since 1960, 87 nations have elected at least 174 female leaders. But in the United States, the only two women to ever reach the top of the national ticket for a major party have lost to the same man - Donald Trump.
